Police are appealing for witnesses and camera footage after a hooded man carrying a small handgun held an employee at gunpoint during an armed robbery at a filling-station bureau de change on the Monaghan Road area of Middletown.

The incident happened at around 1pm on Saturday, 22 August 2026. Police said the suspect demanded money before leaving the premises with a quantity of cash.

The employee was not physically injured, but was described as obviously shaken following the raid. Officers attended after receiving a report that an armed robbery was ongoing and spoke to the member of staff.

Police seek footage from Monaghan Road

According to police, the man entered the premises shortly before the robbery with his hood up and his face covered. He was carrying what police described as a small handgun.

After taking the money, the suspect fled in a blue Volkswagen Passat. Detectives are particularly interested in dash-cam recordings and other camera footage that could help establish where the vehicle and suspect travelled before or after the robbery.

The appeal is directed at anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Monaghan Road area or was travelling through Middletown around the time of the incident. Police want any available recordings or witness information that could help trace the suspect’s movements.
