Police are appealing for witnesses and dash-cam footage after a hooded gunman held an employee at gunpoint during an armed robbery at a filling station bureau de change in the Monaghan Road area of Middletown.

The incident happened at around 1pm on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The suspect was reportedly carrying a small handgun and demanded money before leaving the premises with a quantity of cash.

The employee was not physically injured, but was described as obviously shaken after the raid. Officers attended after receiving a report of an ongoing armed robbery and spoke with the member of staff.

Police description and getaway car

Police said the man entered the premises shortly before the robbery with his hood up and his face covered. He then made off in a blue Volkswagen Passat.

Detective Inspector Griffin said enquiries remain ongoing. Police have not said whether anyone has been arrested.

Detectives are particularly interested in recordings from dash-cams or other cameras that could help establish the suspect’s movements before or after the robbery. The appeal is aimed at anyone who saw something suspicious in the Monaghan Road area or was travelling through it around the time of the incident.
