Richhill’s journey from plantation village to established community will be explored at a one-day history conference in the village on 9 October.

The Richhill History Conference will take place at the Quaker Meeting Hall from 10am to 4pm. Tickets cost £18, and organisers are directing prospective attendees to an online booking page.

Exploring Richhill’s past

The event will focus on the history of Richhill and County Armagh across the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. A range of expert speakers will present research examining how the village developed through those periods.

Richhill is described as a plantation village, with its elegant square anchored by a striking 17th-century castle overlooking the surrounding landscape. The conference will look beyond that formal appearance to examine the older identity and history beneath it.

The village’s earlier name, “the hollow of the cauldron”, is given as the Old Irish meaning of Legacorry. The description suggests a place where different events and influences came together and changed over time.
