Positive Ageing Month is returning to Armagh this October with a programme of activities designed to help residents aged over 50 stay active, meet new people and try something different.

The month-long celebration will take place across Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough, with events focused on healthy habits, social connections and opportunities to discover new interests.

Activities planned across Armagh and the borough

The programme includes sports and exercise sessions alongside arts, entertainment, health activities, cooking and crafts. A series of tea dances, described by the council as ever-popular, will also feature during the month.

Events and classes are scheduled for venues in Armagh, Portadown, Lurgan, Banbridge and Dromore, as well as local villages and rural centres. The council says the programme is intended to give older residents opportunities to make new connections, become more active and learn new hobbies.

Positive Ageing Month is being promoted as an opportunity for people to take part whether they want to develop a skill, find a new activity or simply meet others in their community.

Lord Mayor encourages residents to get involved

Lord Mayor of the ABC Borough and Council Age Friendly Champion, Councillor Mary O’Dowd, encouraged residents to sign up for something new during October.

“Positive Ageing Month is about renewal. For those of us who are aged over 50, now is the chance to try something new, learn a new hobby or skill and maybe meet some new friends,” said the Lord Mayor.

She also highlighted the importance of remaining active and connected as people get older, and encouraged families and friends to share details of the programme with anyone who may be interested.

“We all know, that staying active and staying connected are two of the most important things which we need to do as we get older. The benefits and the joy of getting involved in a different activity, can make such a positive impact on our lives.
“If you are aged over 50, or maybe you have family and friends who are aged over 50, then let them know about this amazing programme of activities which we have lined up throughout October.”
