Police are appealing for witnesses after a hooded gunman held an employee at gunpoint during an armed robbery at a filling station bureau de change in the Monaghan Road area of Middletown.

The incident happened at around 1pm on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The suspect, who was reportedly carrying a small handgun, demanded money before leaving the premises with a quantity of cash.

The employee was not physically injured but was described as obviously shaken after the raid. Officers attended after receiving a report of an ongoing armed robbery and spoke with the member of staff.

Police description and getaway car

Detective Inspector Griffin said the man entered the premises shortly before the robbery with his hood up and his face covered. Police said he made off in a blue Volkswagen Passat.

Detectives have not said whether anyone has been arrested. Enquiries remain ongoing, and officers are asking people who saw anything suspicious in the area to come forward.

Police are particularly interested in dash-cam recordings or other footage that could help establish the suspect’s movements before or after the robbery. The appeal includes anyone who may have been travelling through the Monaghan Road area around the time of the incident.
