A developer behind plans for a new residential quarter in central Belfast has announced a public information event on proposals for up to 150 co-living homes on Academy Street.
Castlebrooke Investments said the drop-in session will offer more detail about a building of up to 15 storeys, with commercial space proposed at ground-floor level. The event will be held at the Mac in Belfast on August 26, from 3pm to 7pm.
What is proposed for Academy Street?
The scheme would provide private living space for residents alongside shared facilities, including lounges and workspaces. Castlebrooke said these communal areas are intended to “encourage a strong sense of community”.
The Academy Street project is part of wider proposals covering six acres of central Belfast between North Street and Donegall Street, bordering Royal Avenue and including Writer’s Square.
Those plans include around 1,000 new homes, social and affordable accommodation, two four-star hotels and up to 100,000 square feet of mixed-use space. The proposed commercial element would include shops, restaurants, cafés and services.
How can people respond?
Gerry Hughes, who leads the professional team designing the wider North Street and Donegall Street scheme, said the additional event would allow people to examine the Academy Street element during the consultation process.
“Co-living is a relatively new concept for Belfast, so we feel it’s important to give people the chance to find out more about this key element of the wider scheme.”
Information about the event is also available through the consultation website. Castlebrooke said an online feedback form will be open from August 26 until September 25.
Hughes said the developer believed the area was suitable for a new neighbourhood because of its proximity to jobs, education, culture, transport and Belfast city-centre amenities.
The proposals follow changes to the development formerly known as Tribeca, with the current scheme described as residential-led.
