Readers will soon see Belfast’s best-known landmarks through the chaotic eyes of Dennis the Menace and the Beano gang, as a new five-week comic series brings the city into the classic title’s latest adventure.
The Belfast edition is released in supermarkets and newsagents on Friday, 14 August 2026. Belfast Telegraph subscribers can also access the comic digitally through the newspaper’s e-paper app, following a partnership announced last month.
A five-week tour of the UK and Ireland
The storyline begins after a giant whoopee cushion prank blows out every window in Beanotown. The town’s mayor decides that Dennis, Minnie and the Bash Street characters need to learn better behaviour, sending them on a tour to meet children in cities across the UK and Ireland.
The story will unfold across consecutive weekly issues. The gang travels from London to Cardiff, then to Dublin, Belfast and Edinburgh, with the characters taking their familiar mischief to each destination.
Belfast landmarks take centre stage
Several of the Belfast strips feature locations that will be familiar to local readers. In one story, Dennis the Menace visits the Titanic Museum, where a runaway “ice-cream-berg” causes the Bash Street bus to appear to sink.
Another strip sees Minnie the Minx encounter a mysterious but oddly familiar cupboard at CS Lewis Square. The Bash Street Kids also attempt to plan an escape from Crumlin Road Gaol after being locked up by their repeatedly tormented teacher.
The Belfast setting is part of DC Thomson’s wider attempt to place the comic’s characters in recognisable locations while keeping the fantastical humour associated with Beano.
“We hope families enjoy seeing familiar places through Dennis’s eyes, where every castle has room for a funny dragon, every journey feels like a Beano adventure, and every destination is a little closer to Beanotown than grown-ups might think.”
That is according to Mike Stirling, the comic’s editorial director, who said Dennis’s stories had encouraged generations of children to see imagination, laughter and mischief as part of an adventure.
Published by Scottish company DC Thomson, Beano recently marked its 88th birthday and has more than 4,300 issues in its back catalogue. The publisher describes it as the world’s longest-running weekly comic.
The Belfast edition is available in shops and to Belfast Telegraph subscribers through the e-paper app. The series will continue with further weekly issues as the Beanotown gang completes its tour.
