The future of Armagh football was on full display during the opening weekend of the Cormac Leonard Commercials Senior Football Championship, as teenage and under-23 players made decisive contributions for teams across the county.
From a late two-pointer at Felix Hamill Park to a dominant 24-point away win, emerging talent provided some of the key moments in the first round. The weekend also saw four Dromintee championship debutants impress against reigning county champions Madden.
Feeney settles Maghery thriller
Maghery edged past Armagh Harps on Friday night in a match that featured plenty of experience and senior championship pedigree. However, the difference was Jonah Feeney, who had collected his AS Level results the previous day.
Feeney struck the net just six minutes into the game and remained a constant problem for the Harps defence. With the contest level in stoppage time, he took responsibility for a two-pointer from just inside the 45-metre line.
The effort broke the deadlock and secured the points for Maghery, giving Feeney a match-winning moment that will be remembered from the opening weekend.
Culloville’s young side makes a statement
Culloville made a powerful impression on Saturday with four goals in a 24-point victory away to Granemore. The Blues’ performance was particularly encouraging because 11 of their starting 15 players were under the age of 23.
Eighteen-year-old Eoin Duffy led the scoring with 1-7, while 22-year-old Dara Quinn matched that tally and also created two further goals. Ryan Duffy, Aaron Garvey, Charlie Garvey, Taidgh O’Neill and James King also stood out.
The result underlined the progress of the teams that won the U21 Senior Championship in 2024 and 2025. Culloville’s display suggested that this group has now arrived at senior level and intends to remain there.
Young players shine in Cullyhanna and Dromintee
Cullyhanna secured a derby victory over Silverbridge on Saturday night, with Tiarnan O’Neill and Lewis Bellew making important contributions. O’Neill, who was unfazed despite the absence of Phelim Savage and Jason Duffy from midfield, scored two points from play.
Bellew matched that tally from wing back and helped create the only goal. He collected James Carragher’s kick-out, carried the ball forward for 50 metres and supplied Ross McQuillan, who finished into the net.
Dromintee’s developing generation also took centre stage in Sunday night’s draw with county champions Madden. Michael O’Neill, Keane McArdle, Diarmaid O’Rourke and Fergus Toale all made their championship debuts and were among Dromintee’s stand-out performers.
The four players are part of a group that won the All-Ireland Feile and Ulster Championships at under-16 and under-18 level. Dromintee created enough chances to feel unfortunate not to win, but the result was secondary to the confidence and pride generated by the young players’ performance. The club can now move forward believing it is capable of competing with any team in the county.
