Armagh residents aged over 65 and people with mobility issues are being encouraged to request a free home safety assessment ahead of Falls Prevention Awareness Week 2026.
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council’s Home Safety team is urging people to identify hazards in their homes and take simple steps to reduce the risk of falls and potentially serious injuries.
The awareness week will run from September 21 to September 25. ABC Council and the Public Health Agency say the assessment can identify factors that increase the risk of falling and provide advice on actions that may help reduce that risk.
Why falls prevention matters
The council says falls are a significant health risk in Northern Ireland. According to the Chief Medical Officer’s Health Intelligence briefing 2024, falls were the major single cause of unintentional deaths, accounting for 2,279 deaths in Northern Ireland between 2011 and 2020.
Falls are also described as the single biggest cause of accidental injuries in the home. Among people aged over 65, 80% of hospital admissions resulting from accidents are caused by a fall, according to the information issued by the council.
Residents are being advised that small changes around the home can make a difference. The guidance includes standing up slowly from a chair or bed to avoid dizziness and using a walking aid where one has been provided.
Advice for making homes safer
- Keep stairs clear and do not leave items on them that could cause a trip or fall.
- Make sure the home is well lit and switch on lights at night, particularly when getting up.
- Remove loose or worn mats and rugs.
- Avoid trailing leads and wires.
- Wear well-fitting shoes or slippers with laces or Velcro fastenings.
- Consider grab rails in the bathroom or handrails on stairs for extra support.
A Home Safety Officer can provide information about preventing accidents in the home. Referrals can also be made to other services where additional support is needed.
These include the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, which can fit free smoke alarms; the Housing Executive, for housing-related issues and repairs; and Occupational Therapy, for people at risk of falls.
