Almost £25,000 has been raised to support the recovery of Armagh mum-of-three Lisa McKeever, who suffered life-changing injuries after being struck by a car while running along the Monaghan Road.
The fundraising total was achieved through a concerted effort by Lisa’s friends and family, who organised a community walk to support her recovery. The group, known collectively as Friends of Lisa, had initially set a target of £5,000.
Community walk brought supporters together
The fundraising effort centred on a “walk and talk” event held at St Colmcille’s GFC in the Grange on Saturday, September 5. Thousands of people attended the grounds to show their support for Lisa, who was described as a deeply loved and highly respected woman from the Grange.
The event attracted messages of support from Olympic gold medallist Mary Peters, County Down television presenter Patrick Kielty and country music singer Daniel O’Donnell. South Armagh man and BBC broadcaster Connor Phillips, who had previously been taught by Lisa, acted as compere.
Lisa works as Head of Religion at Abbey Christian Brothers Grammar School. Her work colleague Brian Hamill said the event had become more than a fundraiser, bringing people together to support Lisa and causes including Air Ambulance Northern Ireland.
“Today, as we walked around the pitch at St Colmcille’s GFC Grange alongside so many wonderful volunteers, friends, and supporters, you were very much in our thoughts.”
Mr Hamill said Lisa had the support, friendship and best wishes of those around her as she continued her recovery. He also described her as “a valued friend and colleague” and said staff at Abbey CBS were thinking of her.
Air Ambulance NI to receive donation
Air Ambulance NI responded after the collision and provided what the fundraising appeal described as life-saving care. A donation will be made to the charity from the proceeds to help support its ongoing work.
Mr Hamill said the gathering had shown the strength of the local community and the kindness of people who come together when support is needed. He wished Lisa a full and speedy recovery and said those taking part were rooting for her.
