A Co Tyrone football club with links to the Armagh area is looking for more young female players as its new season gets under way.
Riverdale Football Club, based in Benburb, is inviting girls to express an interest in joining its under-12, under-14 and under-16 teams. The club already has players from surrounding areas including Moy, Armagh, Dungannon and Blackwatertown.
Teams open to new players
Riverdale said it wants to keep developing girls’ football and encourage more young players to stay involved in sport during their teenage years. The club currently has four underage teams competing in the Mid Ulster Leagues.
“It’s no secret that there is a massive drop off in girl’s participation in sport during their teenage years. And we want to try and reverse this trend in our local areas.”
The club said it aims to provide a safe, enjoyable and welcoming environment where girls can play football, have fun and make friends.
Training has already started in Benburb for the under-12 team, while the under-14 and under-16 players train in Dungannon. The training venue depends on the age group.
Age groups and how to join
Girls do not need previous experience or proven football ability to get involved. Riverdale said its experienced coaches can help new players develop the skills needed to progress in the sport.
- Under-12s: players should have been born in 2015 or 2016.
- Under-14s: players should have been born in 2013 or 2014.
- Under-16s: players should have been born in 2011 or 2012.
The club is encouraging families and others who know a potential player to get in touch, including anyone considering joining a girls’ football team or who knows a niece, daughter, granddaughter or friend who may be interested.
