Police are investigating after the body of a man was found inside a car following a fire in the Harford Street area of Portadown.
The incident was reported at approximately 10pm on Saturday evening, 8 August. Police officers attended the scene alongside the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, whose crews extinguished the blaze.
The man was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police said a post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course to determine the cause of death.
Damage reported in Harford Street
The vehicle suffered significant damage in the fire. Police also reported that a number of windows had been smashed and scorch damage was observed to a neighbouring property.
Bomb squad officers, formally known as Ammunition Technical Officers, were tasked to the scene to conduct relevant enquiries. Police stressed that there was no risk to the public.
Investigation remains ongoing
Chief Inspector Tierney said the circumstances surrounding the death and the cause of the fire remained under investigation. Enquiries are continuing.
“At approximately 10pm on Saturday evening, 8th August, we received a report of a car on fire in the Harford Street area of the town.”
The investigation follows the discovery of the man inside the vehicle after the fire was dealt with. No further details about his identity or the circumstances of his death were included in the police statement reported by the Ulster Gazette.
