Armagh Harps GAA has led tributes following the death of Paul Clarke, a well-known and much-loved man from The Hermitage in Armagh city.
Paul died peacefully at home on Friday, August 14, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Jacqueline and devoted father of Liam and Eoin.
He was also the cherished son of Ann and the late Adrian, and a much-loved brother to Catherine, Stephen, Simon, Philip, Dominic, Andrew, Nathan and Miriam. He was a son-in-law of Vera and the late Jimmy Nugent.
Tributes from Armagh Harps
Friends remembered Paul as a familiar face across Armagh, known for his sharp wit, love of craic and deep passion for Armagh Harps and Celtic FC. Others recalled his time at St Patrick’s College in the 1970s, where his humour and personality made a lasting impression.
Armagh Harps GFC said Paul’s name had become synonymous with the club and described him as an “esteemed member”. His involvement stretched from his early playing days to service on the committee, a management role, club sponsorship, benefaction and active support.
The club said he had been “a true ambassador for Armagh Harps” and noted that he was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2024.
“Paul was a devoted Harps man and Gael.”
The club extended its condolences to Jacqueline, Liam and Eoin, Paul’s mother Ann, his siblings, mother-in-law Vera, the wider Clarke and Nugent families and his many friends.
Social club remembers ‘loyal and lively’ character
The Armagh Harps Social Club also expressed its devastation, saying another seat in the club was now empty. Members recalled Paul’s lively personality, memories shared with him and the random text messages for which he was known.
“Unfortunately, another seat in our club is empty, and we are all totally devastated at Paul’s passing.”
Messages shared by friends included a description of Paul as “a stoic gentleman who fought hard for a long time”.
Funeral arrangements
Paul will repose at his late residence, 24 The Hermitage, Armagh, BT61 8AH. Friends and neighbours can pay their respects on Saturday and Sunday from noon until 10pm. The house will be private for family and close friends on Monday morning.
Funeral Mass will be held on Monday at 11am in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh, followed by burial in St Patrick’s Cemetery.
