A €5,000 reward is being offered for information about an armed robbery at the bureau de change inside Hughes’ shop on the Monaghan Road in Middletown.
The robbery happened shortly before 1pm on Saturday, August 22, 2026, when a man entered the premises with his hood up and face covered. Police said he produced what they believe was a small handgun, demanded money from an employee and left with a quantity of cash.
The employee was not physically injured but was described as “obviously shaken” after the incident. The bureau de change is now seeking information about the vehicle used to leave the scene and the person who was driving it.
Police appeal for footage and vehicle information
A police spokesperson said the suspect made off in a blue Volkswagen Passat. Reports later indicated that the car emerged from a small road just before Hughes’ shop, crossed the bridge and travelled in the direction of Monaghan.
The vehicle reportedly displayed no number plates on either its front or rear. Police are asking anyone who may have seen the car, knows who was driving it or has dash-cam or other relevant footage to come forward.
The €5,000 reward is being offered by the bureau de change. Information supplied to the business will be treated in strict confidence, according to the report.
