An Armagh artist will spend the next year working with schools, community groups and residents after being selected for a new borough-wide Artist in Residence programme.
Jonathan Hackett, an Armagh-based artist, illustrator and storyteller, has been appointed to the role by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. His 12-month residency will be based at The Market Place Theatre & Arts Centre in Armagh.
The programme is designed to give Hackett time and support to develop his creative practice while bringing arts activities to communities across the borough. The council said the work will include collaboration with schools, community groups and individuals.
Support and dedicated studio space in Armagh
As Artist in Residence, Hackett will receive financial and technical support, along with access to professional facilities and dedicated studio space at The Market Place Theatre in Armagh.
During the residency, he will work with three community groups and three schools. Each participating group will take part in a six-week engagement programme, giving members the opportunity to learn from Hackett’s skills and experience.
A particular focus will be placed on rural communities and people living outside the borough’s main population centres. The stated aim is to make high-quality arts opportunities more accessible across the area, rather than concentrating activity in its largest towns.
Irish mythology, folklore and contemporary storytelling
Hackett’s work draws on Irish mythology, folklore and cultural heritage. Through digital illustration and contemporary storytelling, he reinterprets traditional narratives and explores how visual art can connect people with culture and creativity.
The council said the residency reflects its continuing commitment to supporting professional artists and widening access to arts and culture. It also said the programme is intended to create lasting benefits for participants and the communities involved.
Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Councillor Mary O’Dowd, welcomed the appointment.
“We are delighted to welcome Jonathan Hackett as our Artist in Residence. “This residency represents a valuable opportunity to support local artistic talent while bringing creative experiences directly into communities across our borough. Through this programme, we hope to inspire participation, encourage creativity and share the many benefits of engagement with the arts.”
Hackett said he was looking forward to working with people of all ages during the residency and to creating opportunities for participants to explore their own creativity.
“I am honoured to be selected as Artist in Residence and excited to work with communities across the borough over the coming year. “My practice is rooted in storytelling and connection, and I look forward to collaborating with people of all ages to explore creativity, share experiences and create meaningful artistic opportunities together. I hope the programme will encourage people to engage with the arts in new ways and discover their own creative potential.”
The residency was announced on August 28, 2026. Further participation will take place through the selected schools and community groups during the 12-month programme.
