Thirty-three individuals and organisations from across the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon borough have been shortlisted for this year’s Community Awards, with the winners set to be celebrated at a ceremony next week.

The event, announced by ABC Council on October 7, will bring together community champions, volunteers and organisations for an evening focused on recognition and celebration. Broadcaster Rebecca McKinney will host the ceremony.

Finalists recognised across 11 categories

The shortlisted nominees have been recognised for work supporting older people and young people, as well as promoting health and wellbeing, sustainability, inclusion and community safety.

ABC Council said the finalists demonstrate “the very best of community life”, highlighting the contribution of people and groups whose work strengthens communities and improves lives. The ceremony is expected to include an element of glamour alongside the formal awards.

“We can’t wait to welcome our finalists and guests to what promises to be a fantastic evening,”

said the Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Councillor Mary O’Dowd.

She added that the awards provide an opportunity to thank people and organisations who support others, often behind the scenes, and said every shortlisted nominee should be proud of their achievement.

Focus on youth support

Headline sponsor Pilgrim’s Europe is sponsoring the Youth Champion Award. Joy Overend, from Pilgrim’s Europe, said strong communities are built by people who invest their time, energy and passion in developing others, particularly by helping young people reach their potential.

“Pilgrim’s Europe is delighted to sponsor the Youth Champion Award category in the prestigious Community Awards, to celebrate the groups who do incredible work to support and encourage young people across the borough.”

The awards are funded through The Executive Office District Councils Good Relations Programme.
