A creative support group for adults with autism, learning disabilities and additional needs has taken a significant step forward after moving into its first dedicated premises in Armagh city centre.
Circle of Friends has relocated from Dobbin Community Centre to a new base at 53 Thomas Street. The move took place this week and gives the group its own space for activities, social time and skills development.
A space shaped around members
Circle of Friends works on the principle that people have different interests, abilities and preferences. Rather than following a single programme for everyone, the group speaks openly with participants about what they would like to do and where they would like to go.
Those conversations help shape the weekly schedule, with everyone given an opportunity to contribute ideas. The group’s activities can include arts and crafts, baking and cooking, shopping for ingredients, community walks and outings, sensory activities, games and social time.
The sessions are also intended to help members build confidence, independence and friendships. The new premises provide a consistent setting where those activities can take place and where members can spend time together in a safe and welcoming environment.
‘A huge step’ for the group
Announcing the move, Circle of Friends described having its own premises as a “huge step” and said it was “so excited” about beginning this new chapter.
“We’ve been busy getting the space ready, and we’re so pleased with how it’s all coming together!”
The group said the new hub would be a dedicated place where members could connect, have fun, learn new skills, make friends and enjoy a variety of activities.
It also thanked the people who helped prepare the premises. Support included painting and decorating, moving furniture, putting things together and helping to create a space members could enjoy.
Circle of Friends said the assistance had been central to getting the new base ready, and that the group was looking forward to making new memories at its Thomas Street home.
