More than 200 people descended on The Mall in Armagh for the first Armagh I Penalty Shootout competition, with children and adults taking part in a day of friendly football and community fun.
The event was hosted by Armagh I on Friday, August 14. The publication said the competition was organised because Armagh is known as the home of the penalty kick and was enjoying an exciting summer of World Cup celebrations.
Organisers described the day as an incredible event, with a lively atmosphere and plenty of excitement as participants tested their penalty-taking skills. While the competition was designed for all ages, Armagh I said it secretly suspected the adults had more fun than the children, even though they were not nearly as good.
A community event on The Mall
The Mall provided the setting for the competition, which brought a large crowd into the city. More than 200 people attended, participated or supported the event, according to Armagh I’s account.
The event combined a summer football theme with a local community gathering. Its focus was friendly competition rather than a formal match, with participants taking turns attempting penalties and showing off their skills in front of the crowd.
Local businesses and organisations provide support
Armagh I thanked the businesses and organisations that donated prizes for the competition. They were McKvvr Sports, The Jungle NI, Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, Armagh MarketPlace Theatre, Mulberry Bistro and Cup and Cone Armagh.
Linwoods and Emersons supplied refreshments and other provisions to help keep participants fuelled throughout the day. Armagh FC lent the event a football net, while Ross from Gribben Group provided transport assistance.
The organisers also thanked everyone who attended, took part in and supported the competition. Their closing message was brief: they hoped to see the community again next time.
The event was reported by Caoilinn Breen in an Armagh I article published on August 17, 2026. The supplied report does not give a breakdown of winners, age categories, scores or details of another event date.
