Music lovers in Armagh are being invited to experience the full power and range of St Patrick’s (CoI) Cathedral’s renowned organ at a special recital by the Ven Dr Peter Thompson.

The approximately 40-minute performance will feature music by Dietrich Buxtehude, J.S. Bach, William Walton and Louis Vierne. Admission is free, with donations invited in support of the Armagh Diocesan Singers.

A programme spanning four composers

Dr Thompson, who is Assistant Organist at the Cathedral, is well acquainted with the instrument and its rich musical possibilities. His programme has been designed to showcase contrasting styles, sounds and periods while remaining accessible to listeners.

The recital will open with Buxtehude’s Praeludium in C, described by Dr Thompson as arguably the composer’s most recognisable work. He will then perform a set of chorale variations written by Bach during the composer’s student years.

The programme will continue with an arrangement of three pieces from William Walton’s music for the 1955 film Richard III. The performance will conclude with two works by French composer Louis Vierne: Arabesque and the iconic Final from his First Organ Symphony.

“I am really looking forward to the next recital in Armagh. Choosing repertoire for a recital is always a fun process, balancing varieties of styles and sounds, creating something which will captivate and excite the audience.”

Dr Thompson said the selection was intended to reveal the possibilities of the cathedral instrument, from Buxtehude’s use of counterpoint and Bach’s treatment of a simple hymn tune to the colour and grandeur of Vierne’s music.

Free entry and support for choral tradition

Dr Stephen Timpany, the Cathedral’s Director of Music, said Dr Thompson’s experience of the organ would bring out its different colours and sounds.

“As a regular player of the Cathedral’s organ, Peter knows all its colours and sounds intimately and his imaginative and varied programme will be a treat for the listener.”

Everyone is welcome to attend the recital. Although there is no admission charge, donations will support the Armagh Diocesan Singers, whose contribution to the choral tradition on the Hill of Armagh was highlighted by the organisers.

The Cathedral Board will match donations made in appreciation of Archdeacon Peter Thompson’s work and the contribution of the Armagh Diocesan Singers.

The next recital after this event is scheduled to be given by Canon Martin White on Sunday 22 November 2026 at 4.15pm.
