Drivers travelling between Armagh and Newry are being warned to allow extra time when a £318,000 road resurfacing scheme brings overnight closures to the A28 Customs Station Roundabout and Carnbane Way.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins announced that work will begin on Sunday 6 September 2026. The project is scheduled to be substantially completed by Saturday 19 September, subject to favourable weather conditions.
When the A28 will close
The overnight closures will operate from Sunday 6 September to Friday 18 September, between 8pm and 6am each night. The scheme covers asphalt resurfacing at the Customs Station Roundabout, the side roads next to the roundabout and a 300-metre section of Carnbane Way towards Fiveways roundabout.
The Department for Infrastructure said the closures are needed to allow the work to be delivered safely. Traffic management arrangements have been planned to minimise inconvenience, but road users in the area should expect some delays and allow additional time for their journeys.
Signed diversion routes
Two diversion routes will be signposted during the overnight restrictions. The first will take traffic via Carnbane Way, Belfast Road, the Newry by-pass and the A25 Camlough Road before connecting with Craigmore Way and the A1 Armagh Road. It then returns through the Newry by-pass in the northbound direction.
The second diversion will use Shepherds Way and the A27 Tandragee Road. These routes are particularly relevant to people travelling to or from Newry from the surrounding area, including those approaching via Armagh roads.
The Department said local access road users will be accommodated where possible. Drivers are asked to follow temporary traffic restrictions and use the signed routes rather than attempting to pass through the works.
What the scheme will improve
The work is intended to strengthen the carriageway and improve the surface quality on this section of the network. The Department said the investment will benefit local businesses, residents and road users, while supporting connections between businesses and communities in the Newry area.
