Drivers using the A28 Armagh Road approach to Newry are being warned to expect overnight closures when a £262,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme begins next month. The work is scheduled to start on Sunday 13 September 2026 at the A28 Armagh Road Roundabout and is expected to be substantially completed by Friday 25 September, subject to favourable weather.
The Department for Infrastructure said the scheme will improve the road surface at the roundabout and on adjacent side roads running between Kidds Road, Shepherds Way Roundabout and towards Shelbourne Motors. The project is relevant to Armagh-bound traffic using the A28 and to local residents, businesses and other road users travelling in the Newry area.
When the road will close
To allow the work and traffic management arrangements to be carried out safely, overnight road closures will operate from Sunday 13 September to Friday 25 September 2026. The closures are planned each night between 8pm and 6am.
The Department said it has programmed the works to minimise disruption and that local access will be accommodated. However, drivers have been advised to expect some delays, allow additional time for their journeys and follow temporary traffic restrictions. The completion date may change if weather conditions are unfavourable, with the Department saying it will keep the public informed of any update.
Signed diversion routes
Two diversion routes will be signed during the overnight closures:
- Diversion 1: A1 Newry by-pass, A27 Newry by-pass, A27 Tandragee Road, A1 Tandragee Road, B114 Tannyoky Road, A27 Newry Road, A27 Church Street, A27 Chapel Street, B114 Meeting Street, B2 Ballyvally Road, A28 Gosford Road and A28 Armagh Road.
- Diversion 2: A28 Armagh Road, A1 Armagh Road and A27 Tandragee Road.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins announced the investment on 28 August 2026. She described the project as a substantial investment for the Newry area and said the improved strength and surface quality would benefit residents, businesses and people travelling through the area.
“This is a substantial investment for the Newry area which will deliver significant benefits for local businesses, residents and road users.”
