Motorists travelling between Armagh and Newry are being warned to allow extra time for a series of overnight road closures linked to a £250,000 resurfacing scheme at the A27 Tandragee Road Roundabout in Newry.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins announced the work on 26 August 2026. The project will resurface the roundabout and adjacent side roads on the section extending between Shepherds Way Roundabout and Springhill Road.

When the closures will operate

The first closure is scheduled for Sunday 30 August, from 6pm until 6am. Further overnight closures are planned from Monday 31 August to Friday 11 September, operating each night between 8pm and 6am.

The Department for Infrastructure said the scheme has been programmed with traffic-management arrangements intended to minimise inconvenience. However, local-access road users should expect some delays, allow additional time and follow temporary traffic restrictions.

Work is expected to be substantially completed by Friday 11 September 2026, subject to favourable weather conditions. The Department said it will keep the public informed if the programme changes.

Signed diversion routes

Two diversion routes will be signed while the overnight restrictions are in place.

  • Diversion 1: A1 Newry by-pass, A28 Armagh Road, B2 Ballyvally Road, A28 Gosford Road, B114 Tannyoky Road, B114 Meeting Street, A27 Chapel Street, A27 Church Street, A27 Newry Road, A27 Tandragee Road and A1 Tandragee Road.
  • Diversion 2: A27 Tandragee Road, U5160 Shepherds Way, A1 Carnbane Way, A1 Armagh Road and A28 Armagh Road.

The scheme is located at the Tandragee Road Roundabout in Newry rather than in Armagh city.
